Journey to Corfu: Day 1

This year I and my fiancee decided to travel to Greece, to one of the Greek islands, to be more specific. I always wanted to see this country as I have been always fascinated by its ancient culture and mythology. Ancient Greece was a different, magic world that always appealed to me. Not less than Greece culture and cuisine. So it the time to see it and not only read about it in travel guides.

My first idea was Athens but we thought it will be too crowdy and loud and this time we needed more nature, relax on the beach and fresh air. Crete seemed to be an interesting choice, however, I could not find anything that meet my expectations and be financially attractive as well. So at the end, we picked Corfu. And you will see why…

The Alps

We begin our journey from the Gatwick airport in London. It is one of those “almost rainy’ days – it does not rain, but it drizzles and it’s a little bit windy. The whole journey is organized by Thomson. The flight was nice, however, I was freezing at the end as the air conditioning was turned on to maximum, at least, this was how I felt.

The most beautiful views from the airplane were above the Alps and Italian Mediterranean Sea. The Alps looked from the airplane like little hills covered with snow. They were laced with trails and tracks and dotted with turquoise lakes. Greece with its jagged coast is green, brown and creme from the air. When we are landing the airplane is so close to the see that we have an impression that it will land on water. We can only imagine how hot it is outside because it is very cold inside the airplane – so cold that I had to put on a cardigan. In just a few minutes it turned out it was too hot for long trousers and even a t-shirt.

When we arrived at the hotel, which belongs to Atlantica hotels and resorts chain, we were welcomed with a glass of champagne. After getting our room keys at the reception, we were driven to our room. And, to our surprise and our delight, it looked exactly the same as on the image presented on hotel’s website: in warm earth tones with a big bed and quite a large balcony with a small table and two seats. The sea view was limited but it did not matter to us because we could admire a beautiful green mountain that sloped down to the see.

We have 2 or 3 hours to a dinner so we leave everything in our room and go to see hotel’s beach. We are so tired that everything we do is relaxing on deckchairs. Gentle swish of the sea placed us in a mellow mood so we almost missed our dinner.

When we arrived at the main restaurant we were informed that the smart casual dress code is required for dinners so my fiancee who appeared in shorts had to change them to long trousers as they were required only for men.
